Sutra 1.13: Just Do It

Samadhi Pada: Yoga of Being in the Now

    1.13 Tatra sthitau yatno'bhyasah
    • tatra = here
    • sthitau = equanimity/steadiness
    • yatna = effort
    • abhyasah = practice

Sutra 1.12 from last week, told us that a balance between doing and being will bring us to peace. Sutra 1.3, which we'll focus on this week, directs us to the "doing" part of the equation. Abhyasa means to do which in the case of the sutras more specifically means to practice. This is referring to practice in a more specific way (later sutras in later chapters will give us more direct instructions). So, this sutra is basically just telling us . . . . . . practice yoga!

I know we have all had to (and continue to) digest a heck of a lot of new information this week, so I'll just get straight to your weekly challenge. It's easy . . . . PRACTICE YOGA!! Practice every day whether you choose to do physical asana, meditation, breathwork, or anything else that you've accumulated in your yoga toolbox. It doesn't matter when or how long but. . . . .  EVERY . . . . SINGLE . . . . DAY . . . this week please practice! I know I have needed it, I'm sure you have needed it, and I promise in light of everything that is going on, practicing yoga helps!

Looking forward to practicing together with you this week whether through a virtual class or simply through the collective energy we create through our own practices. Wishing you an upcoming week of good health, safety and connection.

Sutra 1.13 Practice is the effort to steady the mind.
