Sutra 2.19: The Little Things

Sadhana Pada: Yoga in Action (Experience the Now)

2.19 Visesa avisesa lingamatra alingani gunaparvani
    • visesa = specific / special / unique
    • avisesa = non-specific / uniform / without differences
    • lingamatra = defined / only trace difference
    • alingani = undefinable / unevolved matter / undifferentiated subtle matter
    • gunaparvani = state of attributes
      • guna = attributes (rajas, tamas, sativa)
      • parvenu = state / stage

I'll admit this is one of those sutras that goes a bit over my head, but I believe the gist of it is it's the small things that often make the biggest differences.

Similar to Sutra 1.17, this sutra seems to be talking about the various levels or stages that come about from meditation. We start off noticing the things that are easy to notice (the physical, tangible things) and if we are lucky we reach a state where we notice the things that we can't even define.

An example of these stages might be going from a tree, to the roots, to the seed of the tree, to the idea of the tree before it even manifests. The more often we sit in meditation and the more we do it repeatedly, the more the subtle aspects of life and ourselves we'll notice. It's the small, consistent steps that we commit to that will often make the biggest difference.

Your challenge this week is to sit in meditation for x minutes (you choose the length) EVERY . . . . SINGLE . . . DAY! What might be possible if you took this time for yourself every day just to create space? What might be possible if you made this an unbreakable commitment this week? What huge gains may come about from these seemingly small steps? I'd love for you to find out!

Sutra 2.19 The state of attributes are specific, non-specific, defined and undefinable.
