I SPEAK

As we learned last time, the heart chakra is where all our answers to any question we may have lie.  The fifth chakra, or throat chakra is about accessing this information.  It’s the place where we discover what is on the inside, so we can express it out to the outside world.  The throat chakra is in charge of communication, and often when we think about communication, we are focused on the words we are expressing out.  But, a large part of this energy center is being still and silent and listening deeply to weed through the voices and sounds that are inside us to discover which ones are truly ours (our own personal truth) and which ones have been put in there by other people.  The following are a few ways to feed our throat chakra in order to help us find that stillness and allow us to access our inner sounds.

MIND
The associated phrase for the throat chakra is I SPEAK.  For many of us, sometimes the most important person we talk to may be the one that we give the least amount of thought to when forming the words we use.  We tend to filter our thoughts and words when speaking to others, but when speaking to ourselves (those thoughts that are constantly rolling around in our heads), anything goes (especially mean, hurtful thoughts/words telling us how we can’t do something).  Why don’t we use our mantra this week to focus on the way we talk to ourselves.  I SPEAK _____________ (lovingly, my truth, positively, etc.)  What thoughts/words do you want to have running around in your mind?

BODY
Foods that are soothing to the throat such as liquids (soup, juice, tea, etc.), honey, and tart fruit (lemon, lime, kiwi, etc.) are foods that feed our throat chakra.  There aren’t any natural foods that are sky blue in color, so the closest thing would be foods that contain a shade of blue (blueberries, blackberries, elderberries, etc.)  The following recipe is one that I modified from the website greenthickies.com.  I often have a smoothie for lunch, and this site shows you how you can turn smoothies into meal replacements, so you're not starving by mid-afternoon.

Blueberry Broccoli Smoothie
1 cup water (I used coconut water)
1 cup milk
1 cup blueberries
1 banana
1 cup broccoli
1 avocado
*** this is what turns the smoothie
            into a meal replacement
2 tbsp sunflower seeds
¼ cup raisins or other dried fruit

Blend ingredients & enjoy.  This recipe serves 2.

SPIRIT
One way to feed our spirit through the throat chakra is through singing.  One of the most healing things for our body and for our spirit is the sound and vibration of our own voice.  Don’t want to belt your favorite tune out in public?  What about singing in the shower, or on your drive to work?  I have found singing/chanting to be very uplifting.  One of my favorite activities to do when I was away on my retreat was to go to kirtan.  Singing/chanting with a group of people can be very powerful.  Take a few minutes to sit quietly after doing some singing or chanting and notice how much easier it is to sit in silence and listen to yourself.  Or, make a game using words and songs.  I know my husband would turn his mantra into some kind of song, which would get stuck in both of our heads for days to come!  Get creative . . . the throat chakra is all about expressing ourselves in our own unique way.

Have an amazing week of listening for your voice, speaking loving, kind words to yourself and others and finding ways to creatively express the unique person that is you!

See you on our mats,

Roxanne
