I LOVE

From the dynamic, exciting, sometimes intense fire element of the solar plexus (3rd) chakra, we move up to the more gentle and flowing air element of the heart chakra.  This 4th chakra is where we can find all of our answers.  It’s that place inside us that knows everything we need to know.  It’s the best teacher we will ever have (the Guru Haridya Manas (inner teacher) chakra lies within the heart chakra), and contains the only voice we should work on hearing and following.  It’s the bridge between our three lower chakras (the physical world and feelings) and our three upper chakras (the unseen world and thoughts).  So, our heart chakra is that place of perfect balance or the union between our feelings and thoughts and our conscious and subconscious minds.

The heart chakra (as expected) is about love.  It’s about both giving and receiving love.  Unfortunately, for many of us, giving and receiving love is easier when another person is involved.  It is often much easier to love another person than it is to love ourselves.  The problem with this scenario is until we can fully love ourselves – flaws and all – it is difficult to fully love another person.  So, lets look at ways to feed the heart chakra and move into a space where we can recognize and love the uniqueness we all possess.

MIND
The phrase associated with the heart chakra is I LOVE.  Fill in the blank to create your mantra for the week – I LOVE ____________.  Ideally, we are filling in the blank with a person or a group of people.  Even better would be to fill in the blank with the word “myself.”  Unfortunately, we live in a world/society that focuses on the negatives.  Somewhere along the way, we have learned that we need to see our “flaws” or focus on the areas in ourselves that we need to improve.  As a result, we end up believing that we are far less than we really are.  To top it off, we have grown up with the idea of competition and seeing how others may be “better” in certain areas than we are.  Let’s take some time this week to recognize our uniqueness, our beauty and our light.  Let’s realize that we deserve to be loved by other people, but most importantly we deserve to be loved by ourselves!  Those around us will thank us because not only will we feel good about who we are, but we will be able to fully and completely give them the love they deserve.

BODY
Foods that feed the heart chakra include cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, brussel sprouts, califlower, etc.), leafy greens (kale, spinach, lettuce, etc.) & sprouts, and green foods (peas, leeks, celery, kiwi, pears, etc.)  The following recipe is appropriately named the Heart Salad and comes from the book “Chakra Foods for Optimum Health  Enjoy : )

The Heart Salad
1 bunch of fresh spinach
1 avocado, diced into cubes
1 cup broccoli, cut up into small pieces
1 tsp fresh dill
½ cup strawberries (sliced in half to resemble hearts)
½ cup slivered almonds
¼ cup flaxseed oil
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
¼ cup balsamic vinegar

Combine flaxseed oil, olive oil & balsamic vinegar in a small bowl or shaker cup and mix well.   Wash spinach & put into a large serving bowl.  Add avocado cubes, broccoli and dill & mix together.  Drizzle desired amount of dressing over salad.  Mix in strawberries and almonds.  Dish out & enjoy!

SPIRIT
One way to feed our spirit through the heart chakra is through gratitude.  Bringing awareness to the amazing things/experiences/opportunities/people we have right now can totally change our mindset and our perspective on life.   There are different ways we can bring gratitude into our life.  Some people start a gratitude journal, some people just make sure they bring to mind something they are grateful for everyday, and some people write something they are grateful for in their day planner as it comes up during the day.  I personally have a few daily gratitude practices, one of which is a Facebook group with a few good friends where we post one thing everyday we are grateful for.  I find it just as fun to read other people’s posts, as it is to share what I am thankful for that day.  Be creative, be consistent and I promise it is a practice that will change your life!

Have a wonderful week of appreciating all you have, focusing on how wonderful and deserving of love you are and enjoying some nice, healthy green food : )

See you on our mats,
Roxanne
